Most tourists arrive at Naples airport to go some place else, like we did when we went straight to Sorrento! This time round we decided to stay for one day to check out Naples on our way to the islands of Ischia and Procida.
Under the cloak of darkness the taxi trip from the airport to our accommodation on Piazza Municipio was memorable only for the noise of car horns and the jolting movement as we drove through cobblestone streets.
On our way back we took the airport bus in front of Molo Angioino. It cost €5 and took about 35 minutes. In broad daylight, the views along the way to the airport were that of a bustling commercial port and an urban sprawl. Fortunately we managed to see some other sights that do Naples justice!
Relais Castel Nuovo
Our studio apartment on Piazza Municipio is conveniently close to the ferry port and opposite the castle. It’s spacious and well equipped. It’s also very quiet despite being in such a busy area. It’ s a pity we stayed only one night!

Around Piazza Municipio
Piazza Municipio is a large and bustling square, located in the heart of Naples, near the waterfront, and is surrounded by some of the city’s most iconic buildings

Palazzo San Giacomo (City Hall)
This grand 18th-century building caught my eyes even from the far side of Piazza Municipio! With its neoclassical architecture, it adds a touch of elegance to the square

Fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno)
This striking fountain in front of the city hall dominates the square. It features a statue of Neptune and is an important symbol of Naples’ connection to the sea.

Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino)
Located just a short walk from Piazza Municipio, this imposing historic castle is a major landmark and former royal residence showcasing medieval and Renaissance architecture. It was built in 1266 under the reign of Charles I of Anjou, from whom comes the commonly used name of Maschio Angioino. It now houses the City Museum with collections of paintings, sculptures and church relics. It’s well worth a visit for the entry fees of €6

There’re scaffolding and endless works of digging around Castel Nuovo because of the exciting finds of entire medieval boats buried in the ground when the works for the metro started in piazza Municipio

Our day in Naples was unexpectedly sunny and satisfactory. Not only did I add to my fridge magnet collection, but it also heralded a week of fantastic weather.

PS. As I was finalising this post I read with horror the news that there’s a major earthquake in Naples a couple of days ago. Fortunately there’re no casualties. Providence looks after us all!
