Choosing the right airline
From my base in Portsmouth, the transport costs to airports at Stansted, or Luton would be a lot more than a “cheap” flight. So I have never been tempted by budget airlines using these airports. In any case by the time additional charges are levied for checking in luggage, or checking in at the airport etc. the total cost would not be any more expensive than a reliable airline that departs from accessible airports, at a decent time and without long delays
Location of the hotel
Years ago when my partner and I went to Rome I chose a hotel just because it was a beautiful palace even though it entailed a 30-train ride to and from the city, a choice I had a good reason to regret. The plane was delayed and when we arrived at the station the last train had gone. The first taxi driver we approached wanted €150 to take us to the hotel. When the second taxi asked for only €65 we couldn’t wait to get in the taxi! This episode taught me 2 things:
1. Never choose a flight that arrive in the evening unless airport transfer is arranged and
2. Choose a hotel in a central location with easy access to metro, tram or airport bus
Airport taxi
I only choose flights departing and arriving at Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Gatwick is convenient because of the train connection between Portsmouth Harbour and Gatwick Airport. The downside is that trains are prone to cancellations without notice or delays. My solution is a door to door airport taxi. I have been using Breeze (as it is called now) for all my airport transportation for years. It is reasonably priced and reliable, easily cheaper than parking the car at the airport for a few days. For me this affordable luxury is essential to all my travelling plans. It is indispensable especially after a long haul flight which lands at 5.00 in the morning!
Waiting for boarding
I like leaving early for the airport just in case of heavy traffic or other hold-ups. To counter the boredom of waiting at the noisy and crowded departure areas I have a pass to use the airport lounges. For an annual membership I can use airport lounges around the world for £15 a time. I can take a guest chargeable at the same price. The lounges offer refreshment, WiFi and a more comfortable environment to while away the waiting time. As it is charged directly to my card I never have to worry about saving enough local currency for refreshment at the airport and ending up with useless loose change
During the flight
A pair of noise-cancelling earphones is a must! My Bose undercover wireless in-ear earphones are indispensable on long and short haul flights. They transport me from the noise of the engines, people chattering and children wailing to a tranquil world of my own music. It relaxes me on a short flight and helps me get some sleep on a long haul flight
Whilst abroad
I and my travel companions always use public transport while abroad on city breaks. On the Continent train service is efficient and reasonable, there is no incentive to hire a car, with all the stress of finding a parking space or getting lost! When visiting a new city I find hop-on hop-off bus very useful for getting an overall view. If a place looks particularly interesting, we return for a longer visit another day. On the other hand, when our hotel is right in the heart of the city, we walk everywhere
