Pérouges is perfect for a day trip from Lyon.
It’s just 40 kilometres from Lyon and around 30 minutes on a comfortable and clean train. My friend and I spent a lovely day there in early May 2018
The station for Pérouges is called Meximieux Pérouges, which means the train station is at Meximieux and not at the doorstep of Pérouges.
However it was not difficult to find – once I asked for the direction at the newsagent in a row of shops just up the road from the station! The helpful young lady even came out of the shop to give us the direction, bless her!
It was a 15-minute walk for us along to the row of shops, past the gendarmerie, to the roundabout with a signpost for Pérouges 1.5 km to the right. However after walking less than 1 km we saw the medieval walls looming and there’s a path to the right that took us straight to Pérouges.
Despite the sometimes greyish sky Pérouges was really picturesque, in fact it added to the atmosphere. The quaint old buildings and the cobblestone paths may look like a film set, but real people still live there!
The main square
The pretty windy lanes
The museum
It was worth the entrance of €5 to visit the museum,if only for the access to the tower for the views of the countryside
Got the fridge magnet!
