Bari, the capital of Puglia was our base for exploring the heel of Italy’s “boot” for my partner and I to celebrate my birthday in April 2016
It’s a vibrant port and university town. It’s also a transport hub of southern Italy. There are 4 different railway stations serving different destinations, and we used all four!!
(1) Main line trains go to Lecce, Milan, Bologna, Venice, Rome etc.,
(2) FSE train (at the far end of the central station) goes to Alberobello
(3) FAL trains go to Matera
(4) Ferrotramviaria S.P.A (Bari metropolitan railway service) goes to the airport
It would have been a shame to just use Bari as a base because it’s worth visiting in its own right. The harbour with the theatre as the backdrop was very pretty especially at sunset. The main shopping area was pedestrianised and full of designer shops but I preferred the Italian chic available at local shops for a fraction of the price!
People in Bari were very helpful too. We just stopped for a minute to look at a map or train timetable and someone would stop to help with their good English!
I loved the cosmopolitan feel to the city. However my best memory of Bari was the seafood!! For once I was too distracted by shops to photograph everything in sight!
