I’ve visited north Devon very often and posted photos of the places that I am about to feature in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Perhaps because of that, my brother and sister-in-law asked to spend a few days here when they visited England in mid-May! So after our sojourn in Isle of Wight and a few days’ rest, we headed to north Devon.
Seabreak, The Nautilus Apartments in Westward Ho!
For as long as I have been visiting Westward Ho! with my partner, I have always admired the row of distinctive seafront apartments with crescent-shape roofs, known as The Nautilus Apartments. Apparently the design was inspired by a nautilus shell, hence the name.

I was super excited that this apartment was available on AirB&B for the specific days that we wanted! This duplex apartment on the first and second floors was perfect for the 4 of us in every way! Everything in it was so new, clean and modern that I was surprised to learn that the development was built in 2004!

Views from the balcony
We all loved looking out from the balcony! It’s a perfect lookout for the Hocking Ice Cream van and the seascape in front of us was ever changing!

It’s rather mesmerising watching seagulls wheeling and swooping in and out of the water. One minute they dived in the white waves, then they soared high to the sky. It then became a challenge for us to capture the seagulls in flight with our phones! I managed a few…..

But my brother who was more patient to wait, ended up with these stunning shots!

Clovelly
This scenic village needs no introduction really. As it’s on most tourists’ “must visit” list, we got there just after it opened at 9.00 when few people were around. We were able to amble down the cobblestone path down to the shore, taking copious photos on the way. By the time we left via the steep slope used by vehicular traffic, the carpark was almost full and thick clouds were gathering!

Great Torrington
Sunny sky beckoned the next morning when we headed to Great Torrington, a market town with an interesting history. It is famous for the Battle of Torrington in 1646 during the English Civil War, when the town sided with the royalists. As it was Sunday, few people were in the town centre, affording great photo opportunities.

However the views from the viewport at the far end of the carpark really stole the show! With vast swathes of countryside with patchwork of fields unfolding before the eyes, it’s difficult not to go overboard with taking photos!

RHS Rosemoor
Charming as it was, Great Torrington was only the appetiser and Rosemoor was the main course of the day! The Garden was more colourful than ever with a bright blue sky adorned by the occasional fluffy white clouds.

Sunset at Westward Ho! & Northam Burrows
My brother was particularly eager to see the site where I took sunset photos on previous occasions. He was in luck! Sunset put on a great show on our last night at Westward Ho! and at Northam Burrows!

Happy times were fleeting. But thanks to photography, such moments could be recorded!
